new software

i hear googles got a new web browser so i figured i'd check it out. not bad, not bad at all. its fast and slick, a little inventive and not ready for mass usage yet. the scroll wheel on my mouse doesn't go up with it. more frustrating then i expected it to be.

the news story broke before google was ready to have a billion pepole use it. it shows. i'll hold further judgement until a full realse launches as its still only beta 0.2

i gave openoffice a better chance the other day, until i realized it didn't have a calender function like i wanted, so i found mozill's Sunbird instead, rock solid, but i'm back to usingt firefox with it. there is no escape, all software is needed. you can't avoid any of it, or its add-on's. damn it.

i've been looking for beer third party alternatives to normal software products and now expect all software to be free. as it should be. we shouldn't be paying for software anymore then minor transaction fees. any suggestions? i don't want ot hear some crazy rant about unix either, just helpful suggestions please.

yea I agree. Why pay software developers any salary at all? I mean it's my god given right to have free software/music/tv. You'd work for free right?

Something about Unix would be a crazy rant indeed, because it's not free and hardly anyone uses it, unless you count Mac users since that's based on Unix. Linux on the other hand..I haven't bought a program in 5 years, and haven't stolen any either. Not just free, it is versatile, and endlessly customizable, stable, and doesn't need anti-virus or anything like that, it is fast and light. One thing I've really gotten used to is a function of the free software. When I want a new program, it's downloaded and installed right away. No going to stores, or worrying about reading reviews and such because I'm only making a small time investment, not a monetary one. What's crazy is how almost everyone pays MS for their crap product that keeps getting worse, then forks over more to make it secure, and doesn't think about looking for an alternative.

Damon don't undermine my point. I'm not talking about your silly small linux apps.

Ron's point is totally valid. There's some things no amount of volunteer effort will produce. Linux software is lacking in GIS, 3D modeling, CAD, some would say there's nothing comparable to Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Big programs like this need years of well funded development.

we're a long way from seeing open source CAD and photoshop programs. those do take years to develop.

computers are being moved towards total online everything. who needs a hard drive when the internet can store it for you? soon the personal computer will be no more then a means to connecting to the internet. at that point, everything you do will be advertising driven. this is where google will excel. they've already bought a bunch of small companies that make good software products and just find ways to incorporate thier ads. the program is free, just look at the ad. if it wasn't for that, this website wouldn't exist. google runs shit. oops, i'm the one with the crazy rant.

ron, its not as simple as working for free. don't be a republican.
