The USA is Winning the WAR ON CRIME
We now have 1% of the adult population behind bars. (I already feel safer, but lets push for 2%)
Thats over 2.3 Million people, or 1 out of every 99 adults. (Maybe if we put more children in jail we can stamp out their life of crime early?)
This gives us a statistical advantage over both Russia and China, our closest rivals. Our incarceration numbers are far higher then the vastly more populated China and on a per capita bases we are besting Russia 750 to 628 per 100K. ( Let us be vigilant, for we dont want an incarceration gap to form)
But shamefully we have fallen from 3rd to 6th place in use of Capital Punishment, now trailing Sudan. (Lets kick it up a notch Texas, BAM!)
As an added bonus for those that live in CT, we are one of only 4 states that spend more on incarcerating people then on higher education. Lets break out the party hats!
GOD BLESS AMERICA
There some debate about this going on in VT as costs go through the roof because we don't have enough cells and other states make a mint housing out of state convicts. Also this separates the prisoners from their families. Anyway, the talk is mostly about getting drug users treatment instead of jail time.
a large part of the problem is our "rehabilitation" programs. they either don't work or they're nonexistent. of course, the other side of the coin is that i don't want money i earned going towards an attempt at straightening out people who have decided to be counterproductive to society, so it's kind of lose-lose.
britain was onto something with the whole australia thing. maybe we should take a worthless state like kansas, nebraska, or oklahoma and just fence it off into 1 big prison. then we could divide california in half, and still have 50 states.
