Odd encounters of the highschool kind

I had an interview this morning at a place called Teleflex systems, they make idfferent kinds of hose and stuff but i bumped into someone there. Ryan Layhee. a few of us played football with him in highschool but i was totally caught off guard seeing him today. i was given a list people people i would be seeing at the interview and his name was one it but i just never made the connection until i saw him. It was akward at first, he was interviewing me and he is hte engineering manager there. after a few minutes everything was cool and we got over the "didn't we go to high school togeather?" thing out of hte way. i have to say he has certainly gotten his act togeather there and is doing quite well. he's married with a kid, has slimmed down a bit and is balding a little. the whole thing was very professional and went smoothly. it was just really akward seeing him and haveing to interview for a job from someone who i kind of know.

yesterday i helped aisling move into a new appartment. she moved out of her moms house and into an apartment off of randolph rd. she's moving in with this kid she knows from back in the day whose girlfriend is moving out after they broke up. i don't approve of the whole thing and this kid and the appartment are totally skechy but she's stubborn til the bitter end so its what she wants. anyway, the skechy kids ex-girlfriend is also someone we went to highschool with, her name was Mel and she had kind of thin black hair, a little white trash-ish and thats all i really know. i don't know her last name so i can't provide anymore info. we bumped into her while she was leaving and we were moving in and we shared one of those, "oh shit i know you but i can't figure out why or from where" kind of looks. then i asked the skechy kid if she lived in haddam and he said yes and i had gone to school with her. that sort of solved that.

either way i've bumped into two people from back in the day in the last two days and both were a little akward. for some reason i feel as though these types of encounters are going to keep happening and in some regards they don't happen enough.

i know i've mentioned it before, but i'm well over due for a baseball artical. and spring training has started. i'm giddy.

if that kid's ex-girlfriend was melanie white then as i recall you have every right to think he's one sketchy dude. wasn't she one of our resident crack whores? or maybe it was heroin, hence the thin black hair...i dont know.

Name is familiar but i cant remember the face. That situation w/ Ais does sound sketchy. I wouldnt be surprised if she starts cheating on you with sketchy kid.

Hey
started grad program last monday, and the setup is sweet. Hand in assignments once a week and discuss on a message board with other classmates and professor. Started rugby training last week, tuesday and thursday 6-8 pm if you want to come watch...first practice my vision blurred and I almost vomited. Been six years since I last played for Uconn but it feels good to be back in the mix. First tourny is on St Paddys day in Butte, MT...should be a good time.

Skiing has been great, the area has got about 75 inches this month and its still coming. good times and alot of face shots-snow hitting you in the face-its deep. Going to be substitute teaching at Bozeman Public schools, orientation and finger printing this thursday. wish me luck'

hope all is well

Yeah those things are going down like a blonde on nickel night. (booya). But seriously i think if we send ~20,000 more troops that will really fix the underlying problems of this war. Wacka-mole foreign policy at its best.

By Blogger Brancibeer, at Wednesday, February 07, 2007 12:40:00 PM

I love how everything is now compared to the cost of the Iraq war, like how we could fund universal health care, or fix social security, (or have a massive tax cut, but no one mentions that one because war fans and tax break fans are the same people, and you can't spend the same money twice, well actually they do) or at a meeting about Vermont's railroads and how none of them can handle modern traffic they mentioned the high cost of renovating the whole system when someone pointed out that was only 20 minutes of Iraq spending.

By Blogger Damon, at Wednesday, February 07, 2007 1:19:00 PM

wait, there's a war going on?

even world war 2 only lasted about 6 years, give or take. i'm pretty sure kids in the generation or 2 after ours won't even recognize these things as "wars" anymore, but will just see them as "news" or "life".

ok i just got a call that my car is majorly fucked up so i lost my train of thought. fuck. later.

ever want to knw what comics are about?

this is s aquick sampeling of a comics news story about books that a re coming out this summer. i think it summs up the comics industry nicely.

SUMMER LOVING

[Green Light]From my inbox this weekend. I have no idea what this is, aside from a new comic from Avatar by Warren Ellis and Juan Jose Ryp.

I don't know about you, but I get the feeling it might be a tad political.

And while we're doing Ellis Avatar covers, here's the cover to his new Apparat graphic novella "Crécy," painted by Felipe Massafera.

I get the feeling it might be a tad religious.

if you can't read the covers look at them closer here.

irony and pennsylvania

one of my favorite and least favorite things respectively. see last thursday's newspaper:

"a party celebrating the success of an anti-gun hip-hop song by a local artist ended when a member of his entourage shot another member of the group over a borrowed car. . ."

i'm drunk at 4:30 in the morning and thats still funny. people are nuts. and why doesn't it tell the name of the hip hop performer? was it one of those crazy religous groups that tries to pass themselves off as legit? was it some crackhead looking for a qucik fiX? is that the same thing?

Micro-Credit Comes to the USA

I've been kinda following the micro-credit idea, where $20-$500 is loaned to people in the developing world so they can start a business or buy some chickens or whatever. These people have nothing so cant get access to Capital, well it seems to be working.

A few days ago the paper reported on a similar development here in the USA. If you need say $2000 to buy something where do you go? Well id say most of us could easily turn to our family, maybe even friends, but for many, thats not an option. And if your credit sucks or you just dont have any credit, Banks are out of the question and Credit Cards... well we all know there dangerous for some.

Now theres PROSPER. A net based person-to-person lending site. Its kinda interesting, basically average people become bankers and loan their own money out to others, with interest of course, why let the big banks make all the money?

Plus your helping people access Capital whom otherwise might not have the ability to, plus with all the information presented and around a 1% default rate, its seems fairly safe. Check it out.

Oh yes, I've been "Keepin' It Real" as well, i just got back from Thailand, but my attempts to upload a picture or two failed, so i gave up and posted this instead.

PEACE!

GREAT

By Blogger wyldshaman, at Friday, February 02, 2007 5:25:00 PM

i've heard a lot about hte micro payment thing to small countries, the guy who inventing it got a noble prize. My dad has this really rich cousine that sends the whole family differnt gifts every year. it used to be stuff like fancy meat or nice coffeecake until last year he sent everyone these giant brandy snifters and someone told him to give up giving everyone crap. well this year he decided to start one of those micropayment accounts for each part of the family. Each account is worth 500$ and we're able to do with it as we please. my parents could care less about it and really don't understand it but i've got a few ideas of my own i'd like to try.

any suggestions?

By Blogger Supreme Monkey Overlord, at Friday, February 02, 2007 9:25:00 PM

How about I sign up as needing a loan, you loan the money from you and your parents to me, I give it to you in real life (minus small cut) and you mark it as paid back, happily holding the cash.

What were your ideas? How about this one from the site:

"I have an opportunity to invest in a revolutionary new device which uses a molybdenum cold fusion photon matrix to initiate a self-sustaining chain reaction that produces more energy than it uses. It was invented by my wacky neighbor in his garage."

Could you buy him tuition for a beginning mechanical engineering class?

By Blogger Damon, at Monday, February 05, 2007 3:05:00 PM

i thought of a similar scam w/ paypal and using the reward points on your credit cards. needless to say I was not the first and apparently safeguards are in place to once again slash my dreams.

By Blogger ron, at Monday, February 05, 2007 10:26:00 PM

no no no, my ideas involve sustainalbe water pumps which are mostly human powered and mosquito nets to fight malaria. its only 500$ no nuclear fusion garage research.

By Blogger Supreme Monkey Overlord, at Tuesday, February 06, 2007 4:37:00 AM

Matt are you trying to single-handedly change the US' goofy convention of putting the currency sign before the number, unlike the rest of the world? What about date order like 6 Feb 07, which sensibly goes from smallest to largest unit unlike ours, and don't even get me (and the rest of you engineers?) going on the stupid dumb ignorant American system of units. I found it funny when Fox News referenced the other day what the rest of the world does to further some argument they were making, but why don't they consult the rest of the world on health care, nuclear weapons, whether or not Israel is a legit country, capital punishment, and where the middle of the political spectrum is. My my it's lonely being America.

By Blogger Damon, at Tuesday, February 06, 2007 6:22:00 PM

no i have no crazy ideas about changing anything of the sort, i just like to write it how i would speak it, 500 dollars (500$). same with the date so i would say the month first, july whatever, whatever becasue thasthow i would speak it.

By Blogger Supreme Monkey Overlord, at Tuesday, February 06, 2007 9:39:00 PM

no problems with the english system here. Just don't try to tell me what a "pound mass" is. I'll kick you in the nuts because anyone with a good education knows that the correct unit for mass in the english system is a slug. ykxnqve
