This was a social nuance I noticed while drinking in an airport bar. When I pretty girl walks by, the length of time a man stares is directly proportional to his age. The older you are, the longer you stare. I've noticed it in other places too, like baseball games, malls, and any other public gathering spot. My first thought is this is caused by a lack of caring as people get older. Say I'm 25, if I look at a pretty girl, odds are I have a better chance then a man twice my age, say 50. If I were the 50 year old, I wouldn't expect to have a chance in hell with someone younger than 25, so who cares if I look at them in passing for a few more seconds. I'm just a creepy old man.
I would also think that the odds of two young people meeting again in another random circumstance would be much higher than that of a 20 year old girl and a 50 year old man. Does this cause one to look away a little faster? I wouldn't want some girl, relatively my own age, to turn, catch me staring and think I was that creepy guy. There's a chance I might see her again. We've all bumped into people who we'd rather avoid because something awkward happened in the past. If I had stopped caring, I could look as long as I want and be placed into the same category as the 50 year old man.
is this a battle with time? Are we all going to slowly give up and just flat out stare at people? While I'm also looking a the hot chick, I'm also trying to look around and see what the other men standing around me are doing and how long it takes them to break off the "holy shit look at that!" stare. Old dudes just don't give a shit and will flat out stare pass the point of what's appropriate or generally acceptable. Even the guy who will stop, turn to a total stranger and point at a girl saying "wow, check that out!" doesn't stare as long as a man in his 60's. He's busy telling the guy next to him how awesome it is to see her. The old guy is just looking, sometimes blankly, studying the subject until something else catches his attention.
