I wish i had more time for this story, but heres a quick version. Jessie, you may not want to read...
So i get out of my car in my driveway after work on the usual friday. I check the mail and squat down to torture a big ole fire ant mound. Then i here a vehicle behind me stop in the road, a window roll down and a voice say, "Hey, you like meat?".
Turning around, "Yeah, i like meat..". I notice its one of those specialty meat trucks- like omaha steaks type thing. What the hell does this guy want?
"Well, i tell you what...", the young guy gets out of the truck and hops in the back bed. "I was suppose to deliver this to your neighbor, but (
tells some story i dont remember)..."
"Uh, yeah, i dont know man..", I say hesitantly of this truck with meat. The guy continues to pull out the packages to show me what he has. Looked like good stuff, but i dont know about buying meat from a guy on a street.
"Look, this is good stuff. It's all vaccum sealed fresh. Restuaraunt quality. You can look at the flyer (
shows me flyer). I need to unload it. I'll tell you what I'll give you all this (
continues to show me steak after steak of different cuts- about 50 in all) for $200.
I laugh and begin to turn away. "Look man, i dont need all that meat, never mind paying that much for it. I'm a single guy... what about selling me just a few cuts?"
"No, cant do it, we sell in bulk....how about $180?" he says.
"I dont need all that meat man", i continue and start to walk away.
"Alright, well if you can pay me with a check or cash, i can do half for $80", he says.
"Naah, thats still more than i want to spend on steak. Look, i buy a steak about once every 2 weeks... i just dont need it!"
The young guy starts running through some price figures about how much these cuts actually cost vs what he's giving me. I begin to get a little tired of the situation and decide to make a larger move at walking away.
"Alright man" the guys says, "How about 50 bucks? You cant turn that down, just dont tell your neighbor"
"$50? You got yourself a goddamn deal!".
It was a good deal, so i had to go with it. The stuff can be frozen for months and it looked like good quality. So now i have a freezer full of NY strips, filet mingon, t-bone, burgers and some other cut i havnt had before.
sweet meat!
Bargaining like a champ! And according to my refrigeration textbook (and this section was ironically covered yesterday, probably just as you were negotiating):
Steaks, or ground beef lasts
6mo at -12C
10 mo at -18C
15mo at -24C
And the vacuum sealing helps immensely.
i got that voicemail you sent that was a pretty odd encounter with the old meat man-door to door meat salesman-wtf
Bring some of that swag home for "MEAT FEST '05: THE RETURN OF STEAK POISONING".
God, do you even know what kind of meat this IS?
